Another Student Loan Forgiveness SCAM

On Aug. 24, 2022, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a Student Debt Relief Plan that includes one-time student loan debt relief targeted to low- and middle-income families. The U.S. Department of Education (ED) will provide up to $20,000 in debt relief to Federal Pell Grant recipients and up to $10,000 in debt relief to non-Pell Grant recipients. More over, after the recent announcement of the one-time federal student loan debt relief plan the scammers are out in full force. However the application for debt relief is rolling out any day now as of October, so focus on getting information directly from the Department of Education and not random email solicitations.

So what do these student loan scams look like? I have attached a scam below that I personally received in the month of October. Having said that, there is a great way to see if something like this is a scam by simply Googling the phone number or the content message. If the results that show up are not enough to make a decision then then go to https://800notes.com/ and type the phone number in the search field and submit. If the number is suspect it will be flagged with the shared experiences of others who received the same scam.   

Sample Student Loan Email Scam:

This was the scam that was emailed to me recently verbatim including the grammatical errors.

"________________ of Raleigh North Carolina United States, We sent out a pre approval letter to your home and did not hear back. It looks like you have been pre-approved for our Debt relief program, however your application does need to be completed. This applies to all the unsecured debt (credit card, personal loans, etc) you may have. If you still have over $10,000 in debt please give us a call at: 888.861.2664 so we can help you finalize this immediately. Please be aware that your approval ends today at 7pm(EST).... The Credit Card Relief Program... *Relieves $10,000+ in credit card debt fast... *Eliminates All Interest Rates and Fees... *Custs all monthly payments in Half...
