Burger King Franchisee Declares Bankruptcy

One of Burger King’s largest franchisees, TOMS King Holdings, which owns 90 Burger King franchised stores in the US, filed for bankruptcy on January 1, 2022, citing issues tied directly to the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased labor availability, inflation, and higher costs for shipping, food, and supplies Meridian Restaurants Unlimited, one of Burger King’s largest franchisees with 118 locations, declared federal bankruptcy protection this month, citing a combination of low sales and skyrocketing costs for food and labor. However, it's important to note that this is not the same as Burger King declaring bankruptcy. In fact, Burger King is planning to close up to 400 restaurants before the end of 2023 due to some franchisees declaring bankruptcy or closing.
